Training Modules

Real Talk is based on conversation analysis research on how experienced clinicians communicate with patients who are terminally ill and their companions. Currently Real Talk includes resources on how clinicians and patients approach the following topics:

1. Broaching Dying

Broaching dying and End of Life care planning. This training module consists of the following:

  • Four case study videos from real life patients
  • A case synopsis giving background information about the patient and the consultant of each case study
  • Clip transcripts
  • Learning points
  • Accompanying resources; annotated bibilographys, research findings and background reading

2. How Long Have I Got?

Asking and responding to questions about remaining life expectancy. This training module consists of the following:

  • Two case study videos
  • A case synopsis giving background information about the patient and the consultant of each case study
  • Clip transcripts
  • Learning points
  • Accompanying resources; annotated bibliographies, research findings and background reading

3. Responding to Pain

A new section on Communicating about Pain is on its way. It will feature sets of clips on:

  • Asking questions about pain
  • Using pain scales
